From uncertainty to safety

A FEW weeks ago BAWCS was contacted by a local care agency seeking urgent assistance for a patient who was no longer well enough to continue caring for a large number of beloved birds.

The owner was understandably distressed and emotional, recognising that continuing to provide the level of care the birds needed was no longer possible. Adding to the challenge was that the birds had originally belonged to his late partner, making the decision deeply personal and heartbreaking.

While from the outside it may seem as simple as “collecting the birds and rehoming them”, situations like this are anything but straightforward.

Dedicated bird rescues are just like every rescue group that support animals in need. Usually entirely volunteer run and impacted by the weight of ‘private surrenders’, it’s not just a pick up the phone and ‘sure, we can take’.

So, thanks to Tiana Pigeon Rescue Support Inc who went into action mode, the process started.

In the end, it took 8 dedicated volunteers and 6 different bird rescue groups all coming together to help achieve a compassionate and positive outcome for these vulnerable birds including 23 pigeons, 3 canaries and 2 lovebirds.

There were enormous kilometres travelled throughout the day, from the initial journey to the property through to multiple pick-ups, transport runs and drop-offs, as the birds made their way to different carers, rescues and new beginnings.

This outcome could not have happened without collaboration, compassion and people willing to step up for animals in need.

Huge shout out and thanks to:

Pigeon Rescue Support Inc (Tiana!)

Peanut’s Pigeon Project (Lilya!)

Lazzi’s Legacy Bird Rescue & Sanctuary (Mon!) who took delivery/assessed the 3 canaries & 2 lovebirds)

Kiwi’s New Life Bird Rescue (who took on the 3 canaries & 2 lovebirds)

Freckle’s Fellowship Pigeon Rescue (who took on the 5 pigeons that needed extra care / rehab)

and

Musical Gully Wings & Wildlife Sanctuary Inc (who took on the remaining 18 pigeons).

BAWCS could not have assisted this person in need without the huge support of everyone mentioned (including our own volunteers) and we were proud to provide financial support to cover costs associated including veterinary care.
